Sam was the first person I met in college. We were in a voluntary orientation before our first semester that aimed to teach how to get along with people of different backgrounds and cultures.

Ironically, rather than meet people of diverse backgrounds, we became fast friends because we had so much in common.

Here are my opinions of Sam based on 10 years of friendship:

Sam is genuine. He respects truthfulness and loyalty. He will not lie to you and he will always put you first.

Sam is thoughtful. He is the type of friend who not only remembers your birthday, but he will ship a thoughtful gift across the country in time for the big day. Since my daughter was born, he has spoiled her even from a distance. (Sam's note: we love Millie!)

Sam is fun! He has many interests and is always willing to try new things. How many guys do you know who could qualify as gym bro, musician, entrepreneur, gamer, yogi, baseball fan, skydiver….??

Sam will surprise you. Despite having a solid routine, Sam will come up with wonderfully spontaneous adventures to share with you.

Let’s just start out with how I met Sam: Sam drove me to our church job biweekly for four straight years. He’s a huge proponent of heated steering wheels (I had no idea this was a thing but his grandma had them and he was jealous!), electric cars, and safe driving! I never died or even got in an accident when he was driving. Additionally, he did not demand payment even when I was trying to force it on him. What am I trying to say? YOU get to be Passenger Princess!

He also does know how to give gifts. As a composer, one of the kindest things he does is write music for something or someone he cares deeply about. While he’s never made a song about our friendship (*cough cough*), if you get lucky enough to secure a spot in Sam’s heart, it might come with a song! And he went to music school so it might even be GOOD!

Whenever I’m going through a rough time, Sam always reminds me to put into focus what is most important. He reminds me not to sweat the small stuff and is the reason my boyfriend and I are in couples counseling. He WILL put the effort into your relationship and I know he would love to go to preventative couples counseling with you-to learn how to solve problems together as a team before it becomes an issue.

As Sam’s good friend (and self-appointed crazy one), I feel very qualified to say that some girl is going to get extremely lucky one day. He’s the kind of guy who actually listens, shows up when he says he will, and cares in a way that feels real, not performative.

He’s unintentionally hilarious, a little dramatic in the best way, and somehow turns even the most normal plans into a full story. Meanwhile I’m usually the chaos… and he’s the calm voice of reason(sometimes😂) That alone should tell you everything.

But truly, he’s loyal, thoughtful, and has a genuinely good heart. Any girl who ends up with him won’t just be getting a husband, she’ll be getting a best friend, a hype man, and someone who will absolutely overthink her birthday gift just to make it perfect.

I’m Sam’s younger cousin which basically makes me his unpaid life coach and emotional support sibling, and I’ve known him long enough to confidently say three things:

1) He will make you laugh.

2) He has an unexplained, deeply committed hatred of Encanto for some reason. (Sam's note: nobody cares about Miguel or whatever)

3) He will somehow still be the most reasonable person in the room.

He’s funny and sarcastic, which means you’ll get roasted, but lovingly. He’s also weirdly committed to the things he loves: Cubs baseball, Star Wars, and, for reasons I will never let him live down, I am personally responsible for introducing him to Taylor Swift. You’re welcome.

Despite his elite-level sarcasm, Sam is actually very big on communication. He believes in talking things through, being honest, and solving problems like an adult… so you won’t have to worry about your relationship with him blowing up. Not unlike the manner in which North Korea blew up their reunification center.

Underneath the jokes, he’s loyal, thoughtful, and the type of person who shows up when it matters. Dating him means you’re getting a built-in best friend.
